Botanical origin
Coconut oil is one of the most extensively studied plant oils in cosmetic and nutritional science. Its unique fatty acid profile — dominated by lauric acid at 45–50%, alongside medium-chain fatty acids including caprylic and capric acid — gives it properties that most other plant oils cannot replicate. Lauric acid has documented antimicrobial activity, particularly against lipid-coated bacteria and fungi. Research has also shown that coconut oil reduces protein loss from hair when used as a pre-wash treatment — making it one of the few natural oils with genuine evidence for hair fibre protection. Cold-pressed from the white pulp of mature coconuts (Cocos nucifera), Azara Natural's coconut oil is 100% unrefined, preserving the complete fatty acid profile, natural vitamin E content and polyphenol antioxidants.

Cocos nucifera — tropical palm native to South and Southeast Asia, cultivated for millennia across the tropical belt as the "tree of life"

Science
The dominant fatty acid in coconut oil, comprising approximately 50% of its total fatty acid content. Lauric acid has documented antimicrobial activity against lipid-coated bacteria and fungi — relevant for scalp health — and exceptional ability to penetrate the hair shaft cortex, where it reduces internal protein loss during washing.
Caprylic acid and capric acid are medium-chain saturated fatty acids that penetrate skin and hair more rapidly than longer-chain fatty acids. They contribute to the characteristic light-yet-conditioning feel of coconut oil on skin and hair, and have their own documented antimicrobial activity.
Natural tocopherols in unrefined coconut oil provide antioxidant protection against free radical damage and lipid oxidation — both in the product itself and on the skin surface during application.
Plant sterols and polyphenols contribute anti-inflammatory and moisture-retention properties to coconut oil. Phytosterols specifically support skin hydration by reducing transepidermal water loss and contributing to the skin's natural barrier lipid structure.
Application
Melt a small amount between fingers. Massage over dry face (including eye area) for 30–60 seconds to dissolve makeup. Wipe with a warm damp cloth, then cleanse with a gentle cleanser. Coconut oil effectively dissolves even waterproof formulations.
Apply to damp skin immediately after showering — the warmth from the shower enhances absorption. Focus on elbows, knees, heels and hands. Can be used generously for full-body massage.
Melt and apply to mid-lengths and ends (and scalp if dry). Leave 30–60 minutes or overnight. Shampoo thoroughly — 2 washes are needed. The lauric acid penetrates the hair cortex and reduces internal protein loss during the washing process.
Ritual combinations
The most classic hair treatment combination: coconut oil's lauric acid penetrates the hair shaft to reduce protein loss while castor oil's ricinoleic acid conditions the scalp and follicle. Blend 1:1 (or 2:1 castor:coconut for intensive treatment) for a comprehensive hair and scalp ritual.

Coconut oil works well on the face for makeup removal and as an intensive treatment for very dry patches — but it can be comedogenic for acne-prone or oily skin types. It is best used as a makeup remover (always followed by a gentle cleanser), for dry skin around the nose or chin, and for lip care. Not recommended as a daily facial oil for combination or acne-prone skin.
Coconut oil solidifies at temperatures below approximately 24°C because of its high saturated fatty acid content. This is a completely natural characteristic of unrefined coconut oil. Warm the bottle in your hands or in lukewarm water to liquefy before use. Solidification does not affect the quality or efficacy of the oil.
Research has shown that coconut oil's lauric acid can penetrate the hair shaft cortex — reducing internal protein loss during washing and mechanical stress. Apply before washing (pre-shampoo treatment) for the strongest hair protection effect. The oil needs to be washed out thoroughly — 2 shampoo washes are recommended.
Yes — coconut oil is suitable for daily body use. Apply to damp skin after showering for best absorption. For people with very dry skin, daily use supports sustained moisture and barrier repair.
